story about a powerless saint who makes a contract with the demon king’s right-hand man

Her magical power pulsed with heat every time her fear-filled heart screamed. If it were any other time, she would have knelt and thanked God.

She would have believed her prayers had finally been answered. But the one who had brought about this change was not God but a demon she had just met. Her stiff body was laid on a white sheet.

“The reason I’m helping a human is simple—I am bored.”

The bed creaked. Verm’s face, as he leaned over her, was terrifyingly beautiful.

Even though she knew it was meant to deceive humans, she felt captivated.

The candlelight reflected in his pale gray eyes like stars.

“As you know, this land has long been ruled by the Demon King. We, the people born of chaos, have conquered humans and created a new society. The result is order, a world without change, and obedient other races. We were once so consumed with conflict, yet now the Demon King doesn’t even leave the castle. I am tired of all of it.”

His cool hand lifted her pointed chin. He parted her lips with the pad of his thumb, and a shiver ran down Lux’s spine.

She was not so naive as to not have some idea what he meant by “absorbing darkness” and the shadows that covered him.

She had also read in books about how demons instinctively controlled humans they didn’t intend to devour immediately.

“I desire conflict. I want to crush those who resist with my own hands. But we, the people of chaos, cannot fight directly with the Demon King, who is chaos itself. Therefore, I will entrust you with it. The hero of salvation and the saintess of merciful light will lead and engage in the same kind of conflict that once took place in this land. That is my greatest wish, but for that to happen, you must become strong.”

Verm smiled as he spoke words she couldn’t possibly understand, and he stared at Lux from a distance where even his breath touched her.

The figure of a bewildered saintess was reflected in his eyes, which seemed to be a sliver of the night.

“Do you know the easiest way to pour power into someone without harming them?”

“………!”

His overtly immoral question stained her clean soul. Lux hesitated.

Should she resist with all her might, even if it was useless?

But she knew it would not help anyone. If she refused, Verm would reveal his fangs and devour her soul, which he would deem worthless.

Worse, he might even destroy the city itself. To a demon, humans were just beings they kept alive for fun, whose lives they could take at any time.
