The End and the Beginning of the Two

“This concludes the matter, I guess!”

As King Regula let out a hearty laugh, the two knights standing before him gave him cold looks with straight faces.

In the throne room, Mitina and Kyelse had finished making up for their unauthorized absence and were reporting various things to King Regula.

Also present at the event was Rennet, as always, and Zeffen, who was there to watch over them. Mitina couldn’t help but feel sentimental, as it was in this very same setting that she had decided to get engaged to Kyelse and live with her.

“With all due respect, my lord. Could you please explain this secret mission to me?”

“yeah?”

“If you forced Mitina to get engaged and live with you in order to marry me, and I ended up marrying another woman instead…”

Even though she was in front of King Regula, Kyelse was unusually irritated and didn’t hide her attitude. He was probably angry at the king for forcing the greedy Mitina to sell him out by dangling a reward in front of her.

King Regla was not one to read this, and he suddenly stopped laughing heartily. However, he quickly turned up the corners of his mouth in a frivolous manner and began speaking without showing any sign of being shaken.

“I didn’t care who you chose as your partner. But, well, if things went smoothly, it would probably be Lady Istaria, or maybe Mitina, the knight whom Kyelse secretly holds in high esteem…”

“Ugh…”

Kyelse’s face twisted in bitterness at the knowledge that the King had been aware of her having had feelings for Mitina for some time. Furthermore, the fact that he had predicted that she might fall in love with Mitina was unbearable in terms of humiliation and shame.

“In other words, King Regula was considering the possibility that I might marry Kyelse-dono?”

“Yes, that’s right. Anyone could guess that with a little thought.”

“I never imagined it would turn out like this…”

The only one who was truly surprised by Kyelse and Mitina’s report was Rennet. It would be normal for someone like him to be shocked that two people who had such a bad relationship ended up together.

“Well, you’re someone who is driven by money. If I had told you to marry Kyelse from the beginning and promised you a large sum of money, you might have done so from the start.”

“How filthy…”

Kyelse was glaring at King Regula with genuine contempt, and Rennet was pleading with her, as if to tell her that she was being rude.

But it couldn’t be helped if she was despised. She was hinting at the possibility of forcing Kyelse and Mitina to marry, if that were the worst case scenario.

In stark contrast to Kyelse, Mitina was calmly pondering. Then, as if she had just had an idea, she muttered with a frustrated look on her face.

“In other words, if I had accepted the mission of marrying Kyelse-dono from the beginning, I would have received a much more generous reward by now…?!”

“Why are you so obsessed with money…?”

“But it’s a waste. I was basically bargained down. I’ve never been more angry than this.”

For now, it seems that King Regula will reward Kyelse for marrying Mitina as promised. Naturally, there is no complaint about that, but Mitina is shocked to learn that she could have earned even more.

Seeing her acting like she was just like her usual self, Zeffen tried to hold back his laughter by turning his face away. However, he quickly calmed down and spoke in a gentle voice.

“But if I had been told to get married from the beginning, I don’t think we would be in the relationship we are now.”

“I guess so.”

“That’s right. When it comes to money, Mitina ignores her own feelings even more.”

”And,” Zeffen added, turning to King Regula with a gentle smile. But his eyes were not smiling.

“If my lord had given such an order to Mitina… I would not have forgiven him.”

“S-Stop it, Zeffen.”

King Regula’s face turned pale as he sensed a faint murderous intent. The two of them seemed to have known each other for quite some time, and there was an air of mutual familiarity between them.

“Being able to rationally motivate people is certainly a valuable talent, but if you overdo it you will lose people’s trust, so please be careful.”

“yes……”

“What you did was the same as placing Kyelse as the captain of the Silver Knights for our own convenience.”

“I’m so sorry……”

“I knew that and accepted it, so I can’t really blame others. I thought it was a good opportunity for Mitina to grow.”

Zeffen said this as if he was repenting. In the end, it seemed like he had led Kyelse and Mitina into a marriage, and he must be feeling guilty about that.

Mitina was overcome with guilt, thinking that in the end Kyelse had been treated like a decoration and her path had been decided for her. However, perhaps sensing her feelings, Kyelse gently took her hand and looked at King Regla.

“I am grateful for your kindness, my lord. If I had not been driven out, I would certainly not have married anyone.”

“Kyelse-san…”

“And…”

He gazes at the person he loves standing next to him, a slight blush on his cheeks, and an affectionate look on his face, unable to hide it even in public.

“I was the one who decided who I would walk with. Even if it was orchestrated, my feelings are genuine.”

Hearing Kyelse clearly answer, Mitina blushed. She was also moved by the fact that she had become able to openly express her feelings in front of others.

His dazzlingly straightforward appearance was as always, and he seemed more noble and beautiful than anyone else.

(You really are a beautiful person.)

King Regula looked surprised at Kyelse’s appearance, but then he immediately smiled softly. It was as if he was pleased with the growth of his subordinate, whom he had had his eye on for a long time.

“You’ve become quite the cheerful person, Kyelse. I have high hopes for your continued hard work.”

“I swear on my pride as a knight that I am the most beautiful, talented, and versatile person in the world, and I will definitely show you the results you desire!”

Seeing Kyelse answering with a confident and fearless smile, Mitina also smiled.

This excessive self-confidence and almost arrogant attitude.

That person was none other than Kyelse Beuzen, the knight celebrated as the finest in the kingdom.

 ◆

“But even so, did you really just want to marry Kyelse-dono?”

After the audience, as the two of them walked side by side through the royal castle, Mitina suddenly asked that question.

When he first received the secret mission, he was told that it was to produce an excellent successor, but looking at King Regula’s attitude earlier, it didn’t seem like it was for such a cold-hearted and rational reason.

“Commander Zeffen also said that he was worried about Kyelse-dono at that time, so I guess he was worried about Kyelse-dono…”

“I don’t think my lord would let his personal feelings get in the way. He probably thought it would be convenient to have another user of the secret arts.”

“I feel like I don’t trust you anymore…”

Seeing Kyelse cut him off so quickly, Mitina began to feel sorry for King Regula.

But this was probably also the result of her everyday actions. Especially for Kyelse, who had been manipulated by King Regula many times, even though she had sworn loyalty as a knight, she seemed to have some resentment deep down.

While Mitina was thinking about this, Kyelse looked down and spoke.

“Well… he may have been worried. But it’s hard to understand how he was worried. There’s no point in prying.”

“Is that so? Well, let’s take that in a positive light.”

After hearing Kyelse’s childhood stories from Istaria, it seemed like she could understand why King Regula was worried.

After losing her parents, Kyelse was shunned due to her personality, even though she was needed for her job, and she continued to feel lonely. Kyelse would never show it on her face, but it would have been easy for the intelligent king to see through his loneliness.

That’s why she created the opportunity to give her someone who understood her. Although she was a little dissatisfied with being included in that scheme without her consent, Mitina felt a certain warmth in the thoughtfulness of the clumsy King Regula.

“Now that I think about it, Kyelse-dono’s marriage has been safely decided, but will you continue to live in that mansion from now on? Or… will you stay at your parents’ house?”

Suddenly remembering the huge mansion in Istaria, Mitina almost flinched. Then she realized that she was going to marry a nobleman, a fact that was far too late for her to realize.

“It’s convenient for commuting, so you can live in that mansion as long as you have a job. I have permission from my lord.”

“That’s true.”

Being close to her workplace meant she could spend her mornings at a leisurely pace. Mitina also liked the mansion, so she was happy about Kyelse’s decision.

“I’ll take you to my mansion for a long break. It’s been a while since you last came home though.”

“I see. …There’s no need to push yourself.”

“There’s nothing to be worried about. I’ll show off my wife to the servants.”

“It’s not something worth showing off though.”

Kyelse was annoyed by Mitina’s servile remark. It was as if she was silently asserting that Mitina was worth that much to her.

However, his expression immediately changed, he stopped, and shook Mitina’s hand.

“But first… I need to go to your hometown.”

“Y-Yes, that’s true.”

“I must bow my head and say that I want to take your precious daughter as my wife.”

“That’s…very embarrassing.”

In the first place, it seemed a little cruel to take Kyelse to such a desolate place. However, Mitina knew that if she said something like that, Kyelse would definitely get angry, so she kept quiet.

“They’ll be amazed. If I told them that you married me, a beautiful, talented, wealthy aristocrat who is the captain of the Silver Knights, it would definitely cause a fuss!”

(He looks very happy.)

“I have financial support from you. I will do my best to make your hometown a place where you can live in peace. Don’t worry, everything will be fine as long as I’m here.”

No matter how you look at it, that was an over-confident statement, but in reality, Kyelse could handle anything. In fact, even after her parents died, she had been doing her job as a Silver Knight perfectly, protecting her home and maintaining her current position, so there was probably nothing for her to worry about.

“Yes, it’s very reassuring to have you here, Kyelse-dono. Thank you.”

Mitina smiled softly, feeling a little frighteningly happy. Up until now she had never thought about looking forward to the future, but her heart was already beating fast with anticipation for the life she was about to start with Kyelse.

Seeing her expression, Kyelse looked surprised and blushed, then for some reason she looked at Mitina with a frown.

“Well, we’re alone now, so stop using honorifics and titles.”

“But aren’t you at work right now?”

“There’s no one around. It’ll be fine… Mitina.”

Mitina was surprised to see Kyelse being so cute and affectionate. She thought that Kyelse, who was a serious man, would not allow her to flirt with him while on duty.

“Kyelse-dono, you’re quite a spoiled girl.”

“What, what’s with that way of saying it! And that grin on your face! Ugh… ugly!”

“Yes, yes. But it’s important to have a good balance. I’m at work, so please bear with me. I’ll give you lots of attention when we get back to the mansion.”

“You… remember this tonight too… I’ll make you cry and cling to me again…!”

Hearing Kyelse’s frustrated words, Mitina giggled with delight. Kyelse was charmed by her smile and blushed, but her lips gradually relaxed in a look of happiness.

“Mitina”

“What is it?”

“…I love you.”

Kyelse smiled again as he spoke his feelings freely. Even though they were at work, it was special, she told him, and gently shook his hand.

“I’m just so happy right now.”

“Ah, yeah.”

“Thank you, Kyelse-dono. For teaching me such warm feelings. You even saved my life. I have received so much from you.”

“That’s not true, me too.”

Gently stroking her hair, Kyelse began to speak again, albeit shyly.

“You taught me so much. Warmth, joy, love… so there’s no need to worry. Just be yourself.”

“Yes. I will continue to toy with you, Kyelse-dono, as usual.”

When she spitefully told him that, he frowned again in dissatisfaction. Still, he didn’t let go of her hand and remained by her side, the one he loved.

“Kyelse.”

“Wh, what?”

Hearing her name suddenly being called, Kyelse raised her voice. Seeing such an adorable reaction, Mitina tried to convey the warm feelings that spread in her heart.

“really like”

“Damn… I love you too!”

“Okay then. Let’s get back to work.”

“Let me bask in the afterglow a little longer…!”

Kyelse, who was constantly being toyed with by Mitina, exclaimed. She only laughed at that, and pulled his hand, wanting him to quickly return to work.

“That’s right, hey Mitina!”

“What is it?”

“I forgot to give this to you.”

Could it possibly be a ring?

Mitina’s heart skipped a beat, her sharp intuition acting out like something out of character for her, but her mouth sank when she saw the familiar looking document Kyelse had taken out.

“…An application to join the Silver Knights?”

“That’s right! Now that you’re officially my wife, it would be good if you were close to me at work too. You’d be happier that way, right?”

Even though he wasn’t married yet, Kyelse spoke with the same gusto as always. It was adorable to see him so excited about being united with Mitina, but it was already the umpteenth time they’d talked about it, and it made her sigh.

“Uh… I don’t want to.”

“Why?!”

“I told you the reason before. The Silver Knight doesn’t suit me, and I like the Black Iron Knight.”

Kyelse frowned when I answered cheerfully. Naturally, Kyelse wasn’t the type to give up that easily, and continued to press me like before.

“I can’t just let my precious wife be a member of a militant unit! This time! Absolutely! I won’t give up! Join the Silver Knights! And assist me!”

“That’s what they call abuse of power, isn’t it? You’re letting personal feelings get in the way of personnel decisions, and your reputation will fall to the ground.”

“Hmph, that’s it!”

Kyelse pulled her hand away, then looked at her with wide eyes and loudly declared.

“Of course, you are more important to me than my reputation and my pride as a knight!”

“Eh?”

“I don’t care if it’s for personal reasons! Stay by my side, Mitina.”

Mitina was taken aback when he said that she was more important than the pride of a knight that he had always cherished. Then, after a moment, she realized that he had said something quite bold, and her face turned red.

“I, I see…”

Seeing her embarrassed, Kyelse also blushed. However, she didn’t freeze up, and to add insult to injury, she brought her lips to the back of her hand that she was holding.

“…But I don’t want to quit being a Black Iron Knight. So, Kyelse, please come to be a Black Iron Knight. Then I’ll protect you.”

“I don’t mind. It’s my duty as a good husband to listen to my cute wife’s whims.”

“Oh, is that okay?”

“Of course.”

Even though she had only meant it as a joke, Mitina was surprised to see Kyelse not completely opposed to it.

That being said, there are many issues to overcome in order to get Kyelse into the Black Iron Knights. It will be difficult to make it happen.

“So, let’s have another duel to drive Zeffen away from the Black Iron Knight. This time, I’ll use magic too, and crush him with all my might.”

“What?! Wh-what were you thinking, are you stupid?”

She panicked at Kyelse’s twisted words. She immediately tried to stop him, knowing that she would hate to have another stomach-churning duel, but.

“I’m not stupid! The only person I’ll be sitting in is the commander, I want that annoying Zeffen to disappear! And I don’t want Zeffen to come within a fifty meter radius of you!”

“Huh…? Are you jealous? That’s so embarrassing!”

“There’s nothing shameful about that! What’s wrong with wanting to monopolise my beloved wife!”

“I’ll tell you, even if you become the commander, Kyelse-dono, I will keep my work and private life separate…!”

That day too, Mitina and Kyelse were spotted repeatedly within the castle arguing as usual.

That being said, there was a somewhat sweet atmosphere in the conversation between the two, and the knights, who were quick to pick up on this, were troubled by the unusual sight.

It will be some time before the two actually get married and surprise those around them who know nothing about it.

During that time, the two of them remained harmonious at home and their love grew stronger.
